Aussie Hair Products Review: End Your Dry Spell!

Post Image

Aussie, aussie aussie, oi oi oi! Aussie is an inexpensive hair care brand that comes in fun purple packaging. It includes Australian powerhouse ingredients that are supposed to transform your hair into gloriously hydrated, soft locks. Apparently Australians are famous for this? Either way, these products are pretty darn effective. But don’t be fooled by the “natural” marketing – these formulations are far from natural.

The company name Aussie, a shortened term for an Australian, is a little funny because the company has very little to do with Australia. It was founded by an American, Tom Redmond, it’s manufactured by an American company, Procter & Gamble, and it’s not even sold in Australia anymore because product sales weren’t very high down there. But it was on a trip to Australia when Redmond got the inspiration to start the company.

He had 20 years of experience as a hair stylist, so he knew hair. And he discovered the hair nourishing and softening benefits of Australian natural ingredients like wild cherry bark, Australian custard apple, Australian aloe, and jojoba seed oil, which the Aussie products have featured.

Aussie Products Overview

Aussie is known for their moisturizing hair products.

Aussie is known for their moisturizing hair products. The curly, frizzy or coarse hair communities generally prefer them, while they can be a little too thick for thin, fine or oily hair.

Their hair care products include their 3 minute hair masks, which are revolutionary. There’s also the Miracle shampoos and conditioners, which work together as a routine to reverse various hair issues. Plus there’s the dry shampoos (not something I’d recommend), hair gels and mousses with different hold strengths to choose from, a men’s line of shampoos with more masculine scents, and a 3-in-1 (shampoo, conditioner and body wash) for kids.

Aussie 3 Minute Miracle Strong Collection Review

The 3 Minute Miracle collection is easily the most raved about by Aussie. It is transformative for the hair, works in no time at all, and beautifully softens, conditions, and strengthens. The Aussie Moist 3 Minute Miracle Deeeeep Conditioner lives up to its miracle name pretty well. It heals damaged hair without weighing it down and gives it the most lustrous, beautiful shine.

Aussie Miracle Shampoo And Conditioner Review

The Miracle shampoo and conditioners target either dry, frizzy, dull or unhealthy hair. Full of those great natural ingredients, and showing pretty immediate results, the Miracle line is a real hit. The Total Miracle shampoo and conditioner have jojoba oil, Australian aloe and sea kelp inside. These are intensely hydrating and healing, thanks to vitamin E and other essential vitamin and minerals. According to 2008 research, aloe alone “contains 75 potentially active constituents”, among them “vitamins, enzymes, minerals…and amino acids.”

The Miracle Moist shampoo and conditioner include Australian macadamia nut oil. This has got an abundance of essential fatty acids and vitamin compounds. This is probably the most popular of the bunch, as the shampoo suds up into a thick lather, cleaning well without drying out the hair. The conditioner makes hair less frizzy, gives crazy curl definition, and it’s so, so, so conditioning.

The Miracle Nourish shampoo and Miracle Nourish conditioner have Blue Mountain eucalyptus extracts added. The extracts stimulate hair follicles for increased hair growth and improved shine, thickness and overall health of hair. The Frizz Miracle shampoo and conditioner contain Australian Blue Gum Leaves extract. This is a conditioning agent and smooths frizz and baby hairs or flyaways.

The Miracle Shine shampoo and conditioner is a really amazing set. The natural ingredients in these include Australian ginseng extract, which encourages hair growth by stimulating the scalp. According to research from 2018, “a wide variety of structurally diverse classes of phytochemicals, including those present in ginseng, have demonstrated hair growth-promoting effects”. They also contain pearl powder. Yes, actual ground-up pearls, which is as cool as it sounds and makes your hair glow like a thousand suns. This stuff works right away and noticeably. I’ve saved (what I think is) the best for last.

The Repair Miracle shampoo and conditioner are full of beneficial oils including Austrailian macadamia nut oil, jojoba seed oil, and avocado oil. These oils are full of essential fatty acids and are incredible for damaged, dry, frazzled hair that is susceptible to breakage. Coating the hair shaft with rich oils like these smooths down the hair, making it feel softer and eliminating frizz. It works to make hair soft and smooth. And the conditioner also makes a great hair mask that you can leave in for 30 minutes+ for an intensive, nourishing treatment.

Aussie Instant Freeze Sculpting Gel Review

The Aussie Instant Freeze Sculpting Gel is infused with Australian aloe, jojoba oil and sea kelp. It has anti-humidity properties, and controls flyaways or frizz. Its consistency is thin so it isn’t too heavy for thin hair, and it doesn’t get white or flaky. The 3 out of 4 hold level gel keeps styles in place, and leaves it a little stiff but that’s kind of the point of gel, so it isn’t too concerning. You can also add some to a leave-in conditioner to add a little definition and frizz-control to your hair. The Instant Freeze is a simple gel that works well and doesn’t build up.

Aussie Leave-In Conditioner Review

Oil in glass jar covered with fabric.

Jojoba oil.

Now, Aussie does make a few different variations of leave-in conditioning sprays for different hair types. The simplest version of the Aussie leave-in conditioner is actually my favorite and it can work for almost anyone’s hair. The Miracle Hair Insurance Conditioning Spray helps detangle, it’s smoothing and de-frizzing with Australian jojoba oil, and it protects and heals hair with vitamin B5. The Miracle Recharge Aussome Volume leave-in spray is also a really nice choice for hair that’s bigger and better.

Aussie Volume Shampoo Review

If you’ve got fine, flat hair are you’re craving some va va voom, the Aussie Volume shampoo is one that can give you tons of body and thickness. This stuff lifts while it softens. But, this shampoo might be problematic because it builds up. That ends up being even more noticeable on the fine hair it’s intended for. This shampoo is very decent because it does what it says it will and smells amazing, but the hunt for the perfect volumizing shampoo definitely doesn’t end here.

Aussie Finding Dory 3-in-1 Kids Review

The company has done some awesome packaging collaborations that kids love. Some examples are their Dora the Explorer line and the newer Finding Dory bath time products for kids. The Aussie Finding Dory 3-in-1 can be used as a shampoo, conditioner, AND body wash. It’s a perfect solution for kids and parents who want to get through the bathtime motions as quickly as possible. Or for simplifying three different products for kids who want to do everything on their own. It has a great, childlike smell and is a good, gentle cleanser and hair softener. This product is not tear-free, which is definitely a setback for a kid’s shampoo, but otherwise it’s something that both kids and parents will love. Get your own here.

Is Aussie Cruelty Free?

Aussie is not a cruelty-free brand, and currently does conduct ingredient testing on animals.

Aussie Vs. Head and Shoulders

These two leading drugstore hair care brands serve completely different purposes, with Aussie taking the conditioning, softening route and being far too thick for anyone with dandruff, and Head & Shoulders targeting people with scalp dryness and flaking and usually not being conditioning enough for someone with dry hair. I happen to think that the Aussie products smell better than the Head and Shoulders ones, but they are a little too feminine for most men and the Head and Shoulders scents are more classically refreshing.

The Aussie conditioners are definitely more softening than the Head and Shoulders conditioners, but the Head and Shoulders shampoos are more clarifying cleansers than the Aussie shampoos. Ultimately I would say that Head & Shoulders is the superior brand because they seem to have invested more research into their products and have a better rating from the Natural Skincare Authority, but are not necessarily superior for an individual depending on scalp and hair concerns.

Conclusion

I have mixed feelings about this hair care brand, because they feature some ingredients I love like macadamia nut oil and jojoba oil, and seem to work really well to moisturize and help hair feel more manageable and nice.

But, and this is a big but, towards the end of my looking into their products I found that Aussie has come under fire for using ingredients that are very irritating for some people, and people have complained that some of the products have made their scalp feel itchy or hot, which is definitely concerning. They contain a variety of parabens and certain chemicals that may be really harmful and toxic or the human body.

It’s also not certified organic which almost always means that the products contain GMOs and/or pesticides. So many people swear by these products, so this is a tough pill to swallow, but important information to know.

If you choose to use Aussie products anyway, I get it and no judgment. Most people haven’t had any problems with them, they have not been scientifically proven to be harmful, and no one can deny that they are really effective and give hair a beautiful sheen and softness.
