“All lip balms are equal, but some lip balms are more equal than others.” To paraphrase George Orwell, while it’s true that various brands and varieties of lip care can have only so many differences, the nuances that do exist will, in fact, make a noticeable change in how your lips look and feel. Burt’s Bees, Blistex, Palmer’s Cocoa Butter… it seems that walking up and down the aisles of your local drugstore will provide you with a multitude of choices, but no way of knowing which is the best product for your money. Is eos lip balm the best product you can buy? Let’s find out together.
What is special about eos, you ask? For starters, the unique egg shape of their lip balm distinguishes them from the typical cylindrical-shaped tubes used by other companies. It ensures that you’ll recognize eos lip balms even from afar. The company, also known as “Evolution of Smooth,” launched in 2009. It now produces shaving cream and hand/body lotions in addition to their lip balms.
Ever since Bonne Bell Lip Smackers were all the rage back in middle school, my generation of women has come to appreciate the necessity of lip balms. Lip gloss can be too sticky for on-the-go, and lipstick too formal for certain occasions. But a good moisturizing lip balm has a place in the purses and makeup bags of ladies everywhere.
Especially in the winter, when skin and lips are at their driest, keeping lips hydrated is of the utmost importance. Regardless of whether or not you plan on applying color to your lips after the fact, having smooth skin is the utmost in beauty and health. Let’s face it, having chapped skin is just not acceptable when it is so easy to remedy the situation.
Eos products are natural, free of harmful additives, and many of them are even organic. And if that isn’t enough on its own, the multitude of eos lip balm flavors available will make it impossible for you to limit yourself to just one! If you’re like me, you will want to stash a different flavor in each jacket, purse, and bag you own. This will ensure that you get to try as many flavors as possible. And that you’ll never be without a balm at the moment when you most need one.

A Brief History Of eos Lip Balm
Jonathan Teller and Craig Dubitsky co-founded the brand Evolution of Smooth (eos) in 2006. The duo established The Kind Group in New York, and they gave the name eos to Kind’s personal care division. Teller decided to turn his focus to eos, and he has been running the company since. In the decade or so of its existence, the company has become a real phenomenon. This is especially due to its unique and intriguing sphere-shaped lip balm product. You know what they say: presentation is everything.
eos has come under fire several times in the last couple of years. Dissatisfied customers claimed that their products hurt them. Most often, the company settled these claims quickly and out of court. The company continues to maintain that its products are safe and that it manufactures its products using the highest quality of ingredients. This is not necessarily untrue, in spite of the various lawsuits. Just because someone sues you, doesn’t mean your product is no good.
Some people are more sensitive than others, and a company cannot possibly protect itself against every single user which may have an issue or reaction from using their products. Does it mean the product is bad? Nope. It means they happened to have experienced a reaction. Like many other cosmetics products, eos go through rigorous tests and trials before the company releases the products into the market.
Does eos Lip Balm Have SPF?
SPF stands for sun protection factor. There are many cosmetics products which incorporate a form of sun protection into their formula. Only a couple of the lip balms in eos’s series have a sunscreen quality. The first is the Lemon Twist lip balm, which is SPF-15. The second is Pink Grapefruit lip balm, which has a value of SPF-30.
Contrary to what some people believe, you don’t always need to go for the highest SPF available. In some cases – depending on your skin and its sensitivity, and on other products you use – you have the option of settling for a lower SPF but still enjoying the fullest protection. It is all about you and your body.

eos Smooth Sphere Lip Balm Review
So, just what options exist when you are looking to purchase your first flavor of eos? Well, when it comes to the original Smooth Sphere Lip Balm line, you have the options of sweet mint, lemon drop with SPF 15, honeysuckle honeydew, vanilla mint, medicated tangerine, blueberry acai, passion fruit, summer fruit, strawberry sorbet, coconut milk, pomegranate raspberry, and blackberry nectar.
Yes, that’s correct – the lemon flavor comes complete with SPF to keep your lips not only hydrated but protected from UV rays as well! The eos Smooth Sphere Lip Balm line is entirely natural and 95% organic, and free of any parabens, petrolatum, phthalates, and gluten. What it does contain instead is shea butter and vitamins C and E. Plus, it has natural conditioning oils to ensure that lips are softer and less dry.
Of the above flavors, three of them — Coconut Milk, Vanilla Mint, and Blackberry Nectar — are also available as part of the Visibly Soft Lip Balm line. This is a newer set of products which contain hyaluronic acid and water as well as the oils and vitamins present in the original line. For those unfamiliar with hyaluronic acid, it is frequently found in skin care products. It can actually store up to 1000 times its molecular weight in water. So it ensures that your lips are smooth and soft like no other.

The packaging of the Visibly Soft balms is recognizable in that they have a striped design (unlike the solid color of the smooth sphere lip balms) and also that the stripes are slightly raised. This gives them a nice grip. And if you are a sensory person like I am, it makes the whole lip balm experience that much better. Every product of the visibly soft lip balms is 99% natural, as well as gluten-free, paraben-free, petrolatum-free, phthalate-free, and chock full of shea butter, jojoba oil, and vitamin E. The presence of hydrating essential oils make this balm a real treat for your lips.
For those who prefer the shape and feel of a more traditional lip balm, eos offers three flavors in the smooth stick lip balm shape: vanilla bean, pomegranate raspberry, and sweet mint. Like the smooth sphere products, the smooth sticks are also natural, 95% organic, and full of jojoba oil and shea butter and vitamin E.
Vanilla Bean eos Lip Balm Review
This was a limited edition addition to the eos winter-Christmas pack. The eos Vanilla Bean Lip Balm was released as an egg-shaped lip balm, and also in stick form. The smell differs a bit between the stick and the sphere, and by the way, the sphere contains so much more product than the stick one. If you are deliberating, then wonder no more.
For some time, eos had not released the vanilla bean sphere as a stand-alone product, but since then it has come out with it, and it is available online and offline. There is something so… sensual about vanilla. I mean, yeah, it is a very run-of-the-mill scent on the one hand, but there is something about it which is classic and mild, and that is the kind of scent that I can really get into. It isn’t too strong. It isn’t in your face, despite being on your face!
Price-wise, this lip balm is not the cheapest, and it doesn’t claim to be. It is 95% organic and natural, and there is a quality to it which is worth the money. Now, I know, there are those who buy them for the sake of their collections. That’s cool.
I want it: eos Vanilla Bean Lip Balm
The balm itself goes on clear and doesn’t leave a sticky residue or involve any unwanted side-effects. It has a very light effect of shine on the lips. It is not glossy by any means, but it does leave a bit of a shine on the lips after you use them, and this is much more noticeable if you are actually using this on chapped lips. For those who want a light, organic lip balm, this is definitely one way to go.
But whether you are looking to actually use them, or to simply add them to your collection – or both! – I am sure you will be happy with eos’s vanilla bean lip balm.
Limited Edition eos Lip Balm Flavors Breakdown
Over the years, eos has put out a number of limited edition flavors. Back in 2012, eos came out with their Limited Edition “Alice in Wonderland” lip balm set, which included three flavors: blueberry potion, sweet vanilla nonsense, and watermelon wonderland.
The whole set had a patriotic look about it, with the blue, white, and red cases. Something unique about this set is that once you removed the balms from the packaging, the case made up a cool Alice in Wonderland poster, proving that beauty and art go hand-in-hand.
Another fun thing about the eos Limited Edition Set is that the typical finger imprint on the side of each lip balm was replaced with a Mickey Mouse design by including two smaller imprints above the regular one. Of the three Alice flavors, the blueberry potion was hands-down my favorite.
Following on the success of Alice, the Limited Edition “Basket of Fruit” pack was released in summer 2013 and included four colors: the limited edition Fresh Watermelon (a huge hit in its own right!) plus the ever-popular strawberry sorbet, summer fruit, and pomegranate raspberry flavors. People everywhere could not get enough.

Currently, eos offers a Limited Edition Breast Cancer Awareness collection (strawberry sorbet smooth stick lip balm, pomegranate raspberry smooth sphere lip balm, and berry blossom hand lotion) for which a portion of proceeds benefit breast cancer research. Other current Limited Edition lip balm flavors include Pink Grapefruit (included in the Spring 2016 limited edition trio) and Wildberry (included in the limited edition breast cancer awareness 2-pack).
In addition to their lip balms, which the company is best known for, eos also manufactures hand lotions in berry blossom, cucumber, and fresh flower scents, as well as a body lotion in delicate petals and berry blossom scents. Each of these creams is non-greasy, fast absorbing, and free of parabens (the body lotion is also mineral oil free). In regards to shaving cream, the company’s formula includes green tea, grape seed extract, natural shea butter, and vitamins B3, C, and E which allows you to shave either wet or dry. The addition of oat extract and aloe reduce chances of razor bumps and nicks.
eos Chapstick & Lip Balm Ingredients Explained
The ingredients which eos use are hypoallergenic, dermatologist-tested, and gluten-free. Ingredients include shea butter, jojoba oil, and substances rich in antioxidants. Some of the balms and sticks contain beeswax, which is why the EoS product line is not all vegan. However, it is cruelty-free. No animal testing is conducted by eos or on their behalf. Furthermore, the company makes an effort to avoid using potentially-harmful substances, like parabens and artificial fragrances.

There are so many lip balms out there, but eos still manages to stand out, and in the best possible way. In spite of its popularity, the egg-shaped lip balms are not the company’s only selling point. They have creams, lotions for hands and body, and other products.
The company may have had its share of troubles, but it continues to remain committed to its growing base of customers, and to its core values. The goal of this company (other than being financially successful, of course) is to provide men and women all over the world with the means to experience seemingly mundane events – like putting on lip balm – in a way which is greater than the sum of their parts. As the eos website says: “women want products that deliver moments of delight that transcend daily routines.”
I am inclined to agree and even take it a step further. It is certainly not women alone who are interested in experiencing such things. Men and women all over the country are looking for products like this, which understand the value of looking good and feeling good.
