Wahl Pet Products Review: Wahl To Wahl Pet Care!

Post Image

My dog grooming business all started with my little pooch, Mocha. I adopted him when he was just three weeks old, and we’ve been best friends ever since. Mocha is a mutt, but his short coat, floppy ears and coloring make him a clear Parson’s Russell mix.

Anyway, as my first dog pet, I bought just about every grooming product at my local pet store. I bought brushes, combs, clippers, shampoos, and of course, a flea protection gel. Some of them were Wahl-brand as they seemed the most affordable and durable, which is important when you have a pup who loves to chew.

Researching online, I figured out that all three brushes as well as the double-sided shedding blade were perfect for his coat, so I was lucky. I was also happy to see how much Mocha loved grooming. Don’t get me wrong, he hated baths, but he loved a good brushing and sat through all the brushing, shedding, combing and detangling that I did.

And eventually, my pet-grooming business was born. I graduated from my bathtub at home to a store in town, and I’ve washed all types of dogs – big and small. Mocha is great company and helps the pets calm down if they feel nervous getting a bath or being left alone with a new person. Best of all, I know I’m giving these animals the best care because I’m using products that are gentle on the skin. Most of the products I use now are Wahl brand.

What Is Wahl?

This company didn’t start by selling clippers for pets. It was founded by Leo J Wahl in Illinois along with his patent for a hair clipper 1919. He improved the product in 1967 by introducing the rechargeable battery.

Today, Wahl has tons of different clippers and trimmers, and is leading in the professional and home grooming world – especially in the pet world! Wahl products are sold in over 100 countries. Each year, new technology is being developed to improve the products.

Wahl has developed seven different types of clippers for pets. There are 11 different kinds of brushes, including shedding blades, combs, and pin brushes. There are also a variety of shampoos for different kinds of coats. Wahl shampoo and deodorant products can only be used on dogs.

Honestly, the one thing Wahl is missing is conditioner, which to most pet owners’ surprise, your dog needs! Even though their shampoo is advertised to be a good coat conditioner, usually your dog has dry fur and flaky, irritated skin.

The benefit of a good conditioner is that it sinks into the fur and penetrates the dog’s undercoat providing lasting silky fur. This keeps your dog’s skin and coat healthy, helps them feel less itchy, and makes further grooming easier. I know that with my regular clients whose fur is already conditioned, a grooming will take 20-30 minutes, versus a dog who rarely gets groomed who has a dry, rough coat will take 1 hour.

Wahl Pet Products Overview

Assortment of dog grooming products.

Wahl Pet Grooming Accessories.

Wahl Pets specializes in professional pet grooming for all kinds of animals, including horses, cows and sheep. They sell many accessories to make your pet’s coat shine, including brushes, soaps, nail clippers and fur trimmers.

When starting my pet grooming business, I noticed I was going through my $20 clippers super quickly. I gave in and purchased a cordless Wahl trimmer, and it lasted two years until I needed a replacement. Definitely a much better value for money!

There is also a super helpful guide on Wahl’s site for individualized care of every type of dog. You can choose your dog breed from a dropdown list, select their coat type (short, silk, double or wire) and their size.

You get a breakdown of your dog’s personality, and how to groom their coat, nails, ears and teeth. There are no recommended brands, but Wahl does sell all these products.  I wish I had known about this feature before I bought the four different kinds of brushes and combs when I first adopted Mocha. It would have been so helpful and saved me money on unnecessary items. But then, my business wouldn’t be so successful, so I guess it was for the good.

Is Wahl Cruelty Free?

Unfortunately, Wahl does test its products on animals as there is no statement that says they are part of the Leaping Bunny organization or PETA. This is disappointing to me as these products are for pets and shouldn’t involve harming any kind of animal. There are many other pet brands that are cruelty-free, and it would be great if Wahl would join them, too.

Wahl Natural Doggie Deodorant Review

Deodorant dog spray next to leaves.

Wahl Doggie Deodorant.

I love recommending this to my clients. This contains eucalyptus and spearmint oils to soothe your pet’s skin and take away the doggy smell that sometimes can become overpowering. I use this a lot after Mocha comes in from the rain, but rarely use it when grooming a pet as it usually involves a bath. This can be used as a deodorizer in place of bathing your pet.

Wahl Flea & Tick Natural Pet Shampoo Review

This shampoo is useful when you have a dog with sensitive or irritated skin as it doesn’t have PEG-80 which is a chemical fragrance a medium hazard risk rating of 5. This shampoo contains rosemary, cedar oil and mint which are a great combination to keep away fleas and ticks. It only works for a week and unfortunately doesn’t kill flea eggs, so I suggest you use an additional flea treatment, such as FrontLine or an oral medication.

To use this, first make sure your dog is fully wet. Gently lather in the shampoo. You’ll see fleas move toward your dog’s head, where you should comb them out with a flea comb. Leave the shampoo in for 5-10 minutes. Then, rinse the dog off and apply a conditioner. Make sure to bring plenty of treats to keep your dog occupied as sitting in a tub can be very uncomfortable for him or her.

Wahl Odor Control Natural Pet Shampoo Review

Wahl Odor Control Shampoo.

I’ve usually had to use this on bigger, furrier dogs such as Bernese Mountain dogs and St Bernards. These kinds of dogs love to dig and play, and often roll in the mud. This shampoo has eucalyptus and spearmint oils to eliminate bad odors and condition the coat. Again, this doesn’t replace an additional conditioning treatment, but it’s a wonderful and gentle cleanser for your dog’s fur.

Wahl No Rinse Waterless Lavender Shampoo Review

This is great if you know your dog will not tolerate a bath. If he or she is new in your house or hasn’t been trained to sit still during bath time, you can make sure its coat is clean by using this shampoo. It has natural conditioning ingredients like aloe vera, oatmeal extract and coconut oil, and is scented with lavender and chamomile.

Wahl Oatmeal Pet Shampoo Review

This is one of the shampoos I use most frequently. It contains oatmeal extract, aloe vera and coconut oil to gently cleanse the skin and is scented with lemon verbena and lime. Oatmeal shampoo lathers really well, rinses off easily, and even decreases shedding.

Wahl Pet Cleaning Wipes Review

There are two types of wipes, and I can’t really tell the difference between their scents, honestly. These wipes are useful for cleaning your dog’s paws, nose or ears, and to clear off their drool (looking at you, bloodhounds). The two scents are:

  • coconut lime verbena
  • lavender and chamomile

Again, I can’t really smell the difference, but if you have a particular affinity toward one or the other, feel free to buy it.

Not that I’m giving Wahl all the credit for my grooming business, but I don’t think I’d be where I am today without Wahl products. I learned that it’s worth it to invest a bit more money in clippers and trimmers, so they won’t burn out immediately, and I’m glad I found trustworthy clippers.

There are great shampoos, wipes and deodorants for all types of dogs. None of these products contain chemical fragrance, instead using natural calming scents like coconut, aloe vera and lemon extracts. A reliable, gentle brand that is perfect for any dog owner.
