Redken Frizz Dismiss Line: Top 5 Products Reviewed

Post Image

There’s nothing wrong with frizz. Having naturally frizzy hair, I learned to embrace my thick, frizzy waves in all their splendor and glory – finally. I won’t lie, frizzy hair is not always fun to deal with. When I was in high school, I used to envy my friends with naturally straight, sleek hair. I felt like they’d won the genetic hair lottery and I hadn’t. It seemed like a dream to never ever experience a bad hair day in your life.

Boy did I have my bad hair days. Usually, after wasting too much time trying to tame my hair in vain, I would eventually twist it into a tight bun to contain the frizz. Even then, short stubborn hairs would pop out on the sides, as if to reinstate the fact that my hair was f-r-i-z-z-y.

At one point, I concluded that a hair straightener was the only solution to manage my frizzy hair. Enter chapter two of my hair saga: On the Road to Damaged Hair. I religiously ironed my hair straight several times a week, subjecting my suffering tresses to high levels of heat. It wasn’t long before my hair was frizzy AND damaged.

I then shelled out several hundred dollars on keratin smoothing treatments to treat my damaged hair before, eventually, I decided to embrace my frizz. My hair improved when I stopped my regular straightening ritual and now, I only need to use an anti-frizz shampoo and conditioner, such as Redken’s Frizz Dismiss Shampoo and Conditioner, and argan oil to manage my frizz.

What Causes Frizzy Hair?

Damaged hair causes frizz.

When the hair cuticle is raised, moisture enters the hair strands causing it to swell, creating frizz. If you have experienced damaged hair, either from over bleaching your hair or from regular heat styling, you’ll be familiar with the frizz side effect of damaged hair. There are several causes for frizzy or damaged hair, including the following:

  • Certain hair types, such as curly or wavy hair are more likely to be frizzy than straight hair.
  • Washing hair too often can strip hair of its natural oils, making hair dryer and frizzier.
  • Over brushing hair can cause split ends and breakages, making hair appear frizzy.
  • Over styling hair, especially styling with heat, damages the hair cuticles and causes dryness and frizz.
  • Tight hairdos, such as ponytails or braids, can cause hair breakages, making hair appear frizzy.

Redken Frizz Dismiss Line Explained

Products may treat and even prevent frizz.

Redken’s Frizz Dismiss line includes products specifically formulated to treat and prevent frizzy hair. According to Redken’s website “Redken Frizz Dismiss anti-humidity, smoothing haircare products offers the first-ever Frizz Protection Factor (FPF) with 4 levels of smoothing. Frizz Dismiss offers heat and humidity protection with a sulfate-free cleansing system. It is safe for chemically straightened hair. Frizz Protection Factor (FPF), the first-ever professional scale, allows you to choose protection from frizzy hair based on hair type and humidity level.” Sounds good on paper, doesn’t it?

It seems that Redken Frizz Dismiss products live up to their description because 80% of Redken buyers on MakeupAlley said they would repurchase Redken Frizz Dismiss hair products. The creamy shampoo and conditioner formula spreads easily, detangles hair and removes frizz, according to reviewers.

Like with any product, it’s a good idea to test patch a Redken Frizz Dismiss product if you are using it for the first time. One reviewer complained that her hair started to fall out while using the Redken Frizz Dismiss shampoo, while other reviewers did not find Redken’s products to be more effective than the drug store brand hair products.

Having previously been unfamiliar with the Redken Frizz Dismiss Line, when my naturally frizzy hair became heat damaged and unmanageable, I began to frequent salons to get keratin smoothing treatments. They were effective, but you pay a lot less for Redken’s Frizz Dismiss shampoo and conditioner, and the results might be just as good!

How To Naturally Tame Frizzy Hair

Woman holding her hair to the sides and laughing.

Healthy hair.

I am not exactly the best authority to write on this subject, as I still struggle at times to tame my own frizzy hair. My hair has its days and a (very strong) mind of its own. Despite this, I have found some techniques to combat frizz temporarily. For those of you out there who experience minor frizz and fly-aways, you may see better results from the following tips to tame frizzy hair.

Argan Oil

I am not the only person who swears by it. A drop or two of argan essential oil can do wonders to revitalize hair and reduce frizz. The light oil is fast absorbing, leaving hair smooth and soft. Be careful not to overdo it though – applying too much argan oil can leave hair greasy.

Co-Washing

If you haven’t heard of co-washing before, it’s a method of washing hair with conditioner only and doing away with the shampoo. Co-washing relies on the small amounts of surfactants (cleaning agents) contained in conditioners to clean hair without stripping it of its natural oils. It is a gentler way of cleaning hair that helps to retain moisture in hair and prevent frizz. You don’t have to kiss goodbye to your trusty shampoo altogether. It’s still a good idea to wash your hair with shampoo two or three times a week. This helps prevent residue from buildup and hair from getting oily.

Avoid Heat

Avoid blow drying hair that is soaking wet. Too much hot air on wet hair dehydrates it. It’s best to leave your hair to air dry, and blow dry when it is semi dry.

If you’re trying to control frizz, give your faithful hair straightener or curler a break every so often. Embracing your natural locks and minimizing heat styling can keep your hair healthier and reduce frizz. Applying a heat protection spray or oil before styling can minimize damage to hair.

Go Sulfate Free

Use sulfate and salt free shampoos, such as Redken’s Frizz Dismiss Sulfate Free Shampoo. Instead of using shampoos containing sulfate which strip hair of its natural moisture, go for shampoos packed with glycerin. This hydrates the hair from the inside out and creates a protective coat over the outside of the hair shaft.

Conclusion

Frizzy hair is not necessarily bad, but there’s no denying that it can be hard to manage. The Redken Frizz Dismiss Line offers affordable salon quality products to tame frizz and help you achieve soft, smooth tresses. Conversely, there is something to be said for embracing your natural hair and giving your frizz a nod and a smile. On certain days, you won’t hear of it, but there are times when you can afford to let it be.
