Revlon Lip Butter Review: Butter Up, Buttercup!

Post Image

As someone who suffers from extremely dry lips, I rarely buy a lip product – in fact, I rarely use the ones I already own. Most lipsticks and glosses dry my lips out terribly, so I just find them to be not worth the hassle. If you can relate, then you might have walked right past the Revlon Lip Butters without even sparing them a glance. After all, lip products (unless they’re petroleum jelly) are just not for you.

But it doesn’t have to be that way! You can wear lipstick without suffering – if it’s in the form of lip butter, that is. And today, I introduce you to Revlon’s ColorBurst Lip Butters – your moisturizer, lip balm and lip gloss, all rolled into one.

Revlon Lip Butter Ingredients Breakdown

There is a reason it’s called lip butter! There are many ingredients in this formula that serve as emollients, meaning that they soothe and soften your skin. This makes the product not only go on easily, but also helps to moisturize your lips and make them smooth. These emollients include a whole lot of fancy-sounding ingredients, such as tridecyl trimellitate (try saying that 10 times fast), petrolatum (yup, like petroleum jelly), Neopentyl Glycol Diethylhexanoate, and Hexyl Laurate, to name but a few.

Then there are the ingredients that are purely moisturizing. As you can see, Revlon takes their nourishing and moisturizing pretty seriously! There are a couple of hard-to-pronounce ingredients in this category too, such as squalene (which is loaded with antioxidants and fatty acids) and Tocopheryl Acetate, which is a form of Vitamin E.

There are also ingredients that you’re bound to recognize, such as coconut oil and shea butter. Coconut oil, besides being antibacterial and antifungal, is famous for being super-moisturizing, which is great if you’ve got dry, chapped lips (like me). Shea butter, as well, is incredibly moisturizing and brimming with fatty acids and Vitamins A, E & F.

Keep in mind, however, that there are a few ingredients in Revlon’s lip butter that are there for fragrance, such as Octyldodecanol and Ethylhexyl Palmitate. Fragrances are known to be irritating for people with sensitive skin, so if it doesn’t take much to get your skin angry, you may want to test this product out on a small patch of skin to see how you react to it before buying.

Revlon Lip Butter Flavors Overview

The Revlon lip butters come in 20 different shades, from nudes and light pinks to darker shades. All the colors are named after foods: Sorbet, Wild Watermelon, and Cherry Tart, for example. This makes them sound good enough to eat.

There are no overly daring colors (like purple or blue), but there will definitely be at least one shade (most likely more) that will suit you, no matter what skin tone or lip color you have. If you love bright colors, you’ll adore Lollipop, which is a hot pink color, or Tutti Frutti, which is bright orange.

If you love nudes or natural colors, then you’ll probably go for something like Sugar Frosting, which is a super-light pink, perfect for people with a pale complexion. There are also shades in-between the bright and pastel colors, like Juicy Papaya, which is an orangey-pink. It’s warm, but not over-the-top, so it’s a pretty safe choice.

So, what are the Revlon Lip Butters? They are basically your all-in-one lip product – they’re moisturizing enough to be a lip balm, but pigmented enough to double as your lipstick, as well. There are certainly different shades that are naturally more pigmented than others, but they can all be built up from sheer to opaque with minimal effort. What’s great is that if you’re the type who likes just a touch of color on your lips, you can have that – they do apply pretty sheer the first time around. But if you are really after a full lipstick look, you can build up the color easily enough, too.

Obviously, the best part about these lip butters is that they are super moisturizing, which makes them ideal for people who suffer from dry or chapped lips. I personally never wear lipstick or even gloss unless there is a very good reason – because my lips will be peeling all week long afterward. With lip butter, the idea is that they act as a moisturizer while still giving your lips color – win-win!

The consistency of these butters is incredibly smooth and creamy, which makes them really comfortable to wear and easy to apply. Like most products of its kind though, they are not terribly long-lasting. Luckily, they’re easy enough to carry around in your bag, so you can reapply throughout the day with ease.

If you’re the kind of person who appreciates packaging and design, I must say that I really like the packaging of these lip butters. The lids have a crisscross pattern, and are see-through, yet colored in the shade of the lipstick inside. They’re fun and easy to open – and that’s not to be taken lightly!

Is Revlon Lip Butter Discontinued?

After a whole review on these awesome lip butters, I’m sure you’re itching to get out there and try some out for yourself. Unfortunately, I have some bad news: Revlon no longer makes them. You won’t find them on their website, but like everything, where there’s a will, there’s a way. You will definitely find some of these on eBay. They’re bound to be gone soon,  so I would hurry if I were you!

Conclusion

I think I’ve pretty much made my point by now: Revlon Lip Butters are great for all us dry-lipped people, and open up the option of having color on our lips, for a change! Like all Revlon products, these are not expensive – Revlon is a drug store brand, so if you’re unsure about the product, it’s not a big deal. It might be a little harder to find them. I’m sure you’ll succeed with a little digging!
