Bite Beauty Review: Biting Beauty From Bite

Don’t pretend you don’t have your favorite lip gloss or lipstick hidden in your bag for emergencies, or for touch-ups later in the day. Almost every woman identifies with lipstick, even if you aren’t all that into makeup. I know a surprising amount of people who don’t wear any eye makeup, but you’ll never see them without lipstick or gloss.
One of my sisters will never leave the house without lipstick, even though she has neither the time nor patience for eyeliner or foundation. In fact, I have a friend who is so not into makeup that she didn’t even wear a single eye makeup product on her eyes for her own wedding. What she did have, however, was foundation to cover blemishes – and lipstick.
Bite Beauty Company Background And History Explained

Bite Beauty’s founder started at a company that made body oils.
Interestingly enough, Bite Beauty’s founder, Susanne Langmuir, didn’t originally plan to go into lipstick production. Her first job was actually working for companies to find and source ingredients to create body oils. Her efforts didn’t pay off, and the products she created were not remotely successful. Then, she decided to go on her own, thinking that it would be relatively easy since she already had a background in creating beauty products. But it wasn’t nearly as easy as she had thought it would be.
She went on to create a custom fragrance store, investing all of her savings plus multiple loans from the bank. Unfortunately, disaster struck on the day of its opening. The lower level of her store was flooded with sewage and the problem proved too complicated, causing her to close the store. Luckily (for her and for us), her next business venture struck gold.
Langmuir had always identified with lipstick, even though she doesn’t consider herself someone who is especially into makeup. She believed that every woman identifies with their favorite lipstick, and “it doesn’t really matter what your attitude is on beauty”. She approached Sephora with the idea to create lipstick made from edible ingredients. Langmuir wanted to unhealthy ingredients because as you wear lipstick, you end up swallowing parts of it, and nobody wants a product that is unnecessarily damaging to their health. The name Bite Beauty was coined – because it’s a beauty product that you can safely “eat” – and the company was born.
Bite Beauty Products Overview

Bite Beauty has literally every lip product you could ever want.
Bite Beauty has literally every lip product you could ever want or need – including shades that haven’t even been created yet, which you can create at their exclusive Lip Lab experience. Their products all use edible ingredients, and every single batch of makeup is the size of a large soup pot – they don’t believe in mass production, but rather focus all their energies on perfecting each batch. All their products are hand-made, resulting in a superior product that just isn’t possible to create with machinery.
Bite Beauty Lip Lab Reviewed And Explained
I think it’s safe to say that Bite is the king of lipstick production. They have created an entire experience, called “The Lip Lab”, focused entirely on giving you a custom lip look that works the best for you. You can just walk into the store and ask for an appointment, but it’s recommended that you make one in advance because you’re guaranteed immediate service with no waiting time.
So how exactly does The Lip Lab work? Together with a personal Lip Lab Artist, you can choose one of the following 2 options:
- Custom Lipstick – this will cost you $55 for a single lipstick or you can get 2 lipsticks for $80. You choose a shade, a finish – either, glossy sheer, matte crème, or amuse bouche – and a scent: cherry, mint, vanilla, citrus, mango, violet, coconut, wild berry or citrus.
Choosing a shade is probably the most time-consuming part of the process because if you’re paying that much for a custom lip look, it’s probably because you have something incredibly specific in mind that you haven’t found anywhere else. The Artist will experiment with your specifications by mixing the pigments available until you have found that perfect shade with the right undertones.
They are there to guide you, but it’s really about a look that you are excited about, so don’t settle for something you’ll regret later. You’re able to try on each shade, first as a swatch on your hands and then on your lips, to see how it looks when applied. Once you have that picture-perfect shade, you choose a finish and then a flavor for each of your lipsticks. You can choose either one scent or a mixture of more than one.
All the ingredients are mixed together and then melted into liquid form, after which they are molded and shaped. You can then choose from the different lipstick packagings, and there you have it: a personal lipstick created just for you.
The details are recorded in the Lab’s system and on a personal card for you (which swatches you chose and how much of each, the finish and the scent) and you can use it to reorder once your lipsticks run out.
- The second option you can choose is the “real deal” – the Bespoke Lipstick session. This will cost you $150 and it includes 2 custom lipstick shades of your choosing, a Lip Lab Exclusive Lip Kit, but mostly, you’re really paying for the experience. There’s someone who is completely devoting the next hour to giving you your dream look, which is why the session is so pricey. The Lip Lab Exclusive Lip Kit includes a lip primer, cherry scrub (yum!) and a mini Lip Mask. The actual process is like that of the custom lipstick, in that you choose the shade, flavor and finish.
The Lip Lab is an insanely original idea, and if you’re really into lipstick, or you have been searching in vain for that “perfect shade” – either because you’re really particular or have a specific skin tone that doesn’t look good with most lipstick colours – it’s a really cool experience to try and I would recommend it. It also makes for a fun day out and an extra-special birthday gift for a close friend or family member. There are currently two Lip Labs in operation; one in Toronto, where Bite is based, and one in New York.
Bite Beauty Agave Lip Mask Review

The red is my favorite color!
The Bite Agave Lip Mask is part of their Agave collection, and it comes in three colors: natural (clear), champagne, and smashed (a beautiful red). The Lip Mask is a balm, moisturizer, and lip gloss in one – and its effects are really long-lasting. Because it’s really sticky (which makes it great for dry lips) I would recommend you apply it at night and sleep with it on – you’ll still be able to feel it when you wake up.
If you choose to wear it in the day – wear your hair up! Especially on a windy day. This product is stickier than your average lip balm and will outlast it, too, although it’s substantially thicker in consistency. You can use it as a primer for a matte lipstick if you don’t want to dry out your lips, and it has edible ingredients, so you don’t have to be concerned about what you’re ingesting. The Agave Lip Masks are all very hydrating, and you’ll feel a difference after even a single use.
Bite Beauty Lipstick Line Review
Being that Bite focuses only the lips, it isn’t surprising that they have quite a few lipstick lines. All are highly pigmented, long-wearing, and of course, made from all-edible ingredients.
The Multistick – as you’ve probably guessed, this lipstick isn’t just used as a lipstick – you can use it on your lips, cheeks, and eyes as well. It comes in 18 colors, so you can get three different shades for each area of your face, and no one will be able to guess that your entire makeover is basically all the same product.
Amuse Bouche – I absolutely love the name, but no one buys a product for its name. Available in more than 50 shades, this lipstick is creamy and smooth and feels amazing to apply, with both satin and shimmery finishes available. The actual colors have really appropriate names (although I would be slightly hesitant to wear something called Squid Ink on my lips, despite the fact that it does indeed resemble that). There are lots of neutral and safe colors, and also many bolder colors, so you can achieve any look you want.
Liquefied Lipstick – for those of you who prefer liquid lipsticks, this one is for you. It’s the Amuse Bouche lipsticks, but in liquid format, so if you find liquid to be easier to apply, you’ll love this product. Like the original Amuse Bouche lipsticks, the formula is creamy, moist, and ultra-pigmented.
The Lip Pencil – you can use this either to outline your lips and give them definition and then apply your lipstick, or you can use the pencil to fully color in your lips. There are 50 colors to choose from, so you can choose to exactly match your lipstick color, or, for more definition, use a color to outline your lips that contrasts well with your lipstick color. The pencils are made with shea butter so they feel really soft and smooth upon application.
Bite Beauty Luminous Creme Lipstick Lip Crayon Review
Bite’s Luminous Crème Lipstick has been replaced by their Amuse Bouche lipsticks. The Crème Lipstick line featured super creamy lipsticks, which were popular for their smooth texture and strong pigment. Their replacement, the Amuse Bouche, is basically the Crème Lipsticks new and improved version – very creamy, very pigmented, but more hydrating.
So even though it’s a shame that the company has discontinued a really good product, its replacement is a refreshing change and has become extremely popular in its own right. If you’re one of those who still prefers the original version, I did find a few options still available on Amazon.com.
There’s also the Matte Crème Lip Crayon, which is, luckily, still being produced. This crayon comes in more than 20 beautiful shades, and is super-creamy and hydrating, with a matte finish. The slenderness of the crayon makes it really easy to apply both as an outline and for filling in your lips, and it comes with a specialized sharpener so you can always keep the tip nice and pointy.
Bite Beauty Lush Lip Tint Review
I have a strong feeling that the Bite Beauty Lush Lip Tint has been discontinued, because I couldn’t find it available for purchase on their website, nor on other beauty sites like Sephora or HauteLook. What was this product? It was a moisturizing, tinted lip balm, that you could also wear as a regular gloss, with all the positives that Bite’s fans love about all their products. My suggestion if you’re looking for this product is to try Bite’s Agave Lip Mask – it’s not as pigmented, but extremely moisturizing and great for dry or chapped lips.
Is Bite Beauty Cruelty-Free? Does Bite Beauty Test On Animals?
Yes, Bite Beauty is cruelty-free and does not test on animals. It is listed among other makeup brands on the 2017 cruelty-free brands available at Sephora.
Are Bite Beauty Products Vegan?
Unfortunately, Bite is not a vegan brand, meaning that they do use animal byproducts. Hopefully, considering that the company was founded on such positive ideals, they’ll continue to expand their line and create a vegan range, as some other companies are now doing, like Red Apple Lipstick and Makeup Geek.
Conclusion
I really like the idea of a company that gives a voice to the lips, while providing its consumers with products that can be safely ingested. It’s on the pricier side, but if you’re a regular lipstick-wearer, it’s important to think about what you put on your lips every day. BB saw that not enough attention was being paid to this aspect of lip products, and they stepped in to fill this need. I think it is a company with great products, a fantastic mission statement and overall, a fabulous addition to every makeup collection.
